Sinéad O’Connor is an award winning enameller who creates stunning
enamelled pieces highlighting the interaction between glass, metal and heat
in a contemporary style, playing with the chemistry of how the materials
combine and pushing them to their limits with temperatures.
Sinéad works mainly in copper using the copper oxides to change the
colours of the enamel which she normally applies using the sifting technique,
along with sgraffito and over firing. Sinéad combines different types of
enamels to create another interesting aspect to her work. Sinéad first started
enamelling when she used to make silver jewellery but as her knowledge of
enamel and her fascination with copper started to grow she has now
progressed to creating sculptures and statement pieces for galleries and
collectors as well as her small tactile bowls.
Sinéad textures many of her copper pieces to catch the enamel in the
indentations to highlight the way the material flows under sufficient heat.
Sinéad’s pieces usually feature the use of the copper with the enamel being
pulled back to expose the copper. The majority of her copper pieces are
each handspun to her design by master craftsperson Warren Martin from
Sheffield.
Sinéad also enamels her husbands silver jewellery as well as collaborating
with other artists and craftspeople.
Sinéad’s work can be found in various galleries and exhibitions for an upto
