Sir Roger Moore, KBE

Roger Moore was a much loved British actor whose friendly nature, sense of humour and tenacious professionalism made him a pleasure to work with.

I used to work for a living. Then I became an actor.

He portrayed a number of highly memorable roles during a hugely successful career of over seven decades.

When I started 70 odd years ago, I was told that to be a success you've got to have talent, personality and luck. I've had 99.9% luck and the other minuscule percentage would be having had the luck to have a little bit of talent, being able to stand upright and that's it. It's all luck.

He is perhaps best known for having played Ian Fleming's British secret agent James Bond 007, in seven feature films from 1973 to 1985.

Moore, also played Simon Templar alias The Saint, in the worldwide hit tv series which ran for six seasons (118 episodes) from 1962 to 1969.

My acting range has always been something between the two extremes of Raise the left eyebrow and raises right eyebrow.

Another iconic role was that of Lord Brett Sinclair in The Persuaders! where he starred alongside Tony Curtis. The series ran for 24 episodes between 1971 to 1972.

In addition to a lifetime of acting roles, Moore took enormous pride in his humanitarian work. He was made a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1991, a position he cherished and for which he earned a knighthood in 2003 (for services to charity). He also received a star on Hollywood's walk of fame in 2007.

Working with UNICEF made me grow up and recognise how fortunate I am.

The knighthood for my humanitarian work meant more than if it had been for my acting work.
