Enid Blyton was a children's author whose books have been popular since the 1930's selling more than 600 million copies worldwide. It is estimated that she wrote approximately 800 titles. Her first published work was a poem called Have You in 1918 and her first published book was called Child Whispers which came out in 1922.
It never occurred to me as a child that I would ever be famous. I had two brothers who were younger than I was and I used to tell them stories, which I enjoyed very much indeed and I suppose possibly it was from that beginning that the idea first came to me that I would like to write stories when I was able to.
She wrote on a wide range of topics including education, natural history, fantasy, mystery, and biblical narratives and is best remembered today for her Noddy, The Famous Five and The Secret Seven series of books. Everyday she was working on a book, she would rattle out about 10,000 words letting her imagination run wild.
I knew that I ought to be a children's writer more than anything else, but I also knew that I didn't know nearly enough about children to be able to put over things like good morals, education, information of all sorts and so on. So, I decided that I would run my own school, I ran it for four or five years and in that time I wrote absolutely everything for the children.
All the stories, all the songs, all the poetry they learnt... but I wanted to try my own gift out on them and it was happiest five years there that I could ever wish for.
