Cats is a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Directed by Trevor Nunn and choreographed by Gillian Lynne. It first opened in the West End in 1981, it is based on T. S. Eliot's 1939 poetry book Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and was produced by Cameron Mackintosh. Lloyd Webber reportedly had to take out a second mortgage on his house, while Mackintosh asked the cast to invest their own money in the show. It was eventually financed by relatively small investments procured from 220 individuals.
It has won numerous awards, including Best Musical at both the Laurence Olivier Awards and the Tony Awards. By 1994, the musical had grossed over $2 billion worldwide and the London production ran for over 21 years.
